GeIL, founded in 1993, is the manufacturer of one of the widest spectrum of RAM, which currently includes models from still somewhere in demand DDR2 SDRAM to high-speed DDR4 with a frequency of 4266 MHz. The further increase in frequencies is limited at the moment by the technological process, and therefore the company decided to expand the assortment differently: following the trends of the times, namely, the widespread introduction of illumination.
LED lighting appeared in 2015-2016. in video cards and motherboards of almost all famous manufacturers. ASUS has a backlight system called AURA, MSI has Mystic Light, and Gigabyte has RGB Fusion. And even ASRock, following the example of its older brother, introduced AURA RGB LED backlighting in its products. The very idea of highlighting memory modules is far from new, but the way GeIL implemented it, in our opinion, deserves special attention.
Moreover, 27 memory sets were immediately subjected to such modding optimization, starting with the inexpensive DDR4 2133 MHz with the volume 2 × 4 GB ($ 68) and ending with overclocking DDR4 4133 MHz with 2 × 16 GB (> $ 350). The entire list of GeIL Evo X modules is presented in the table.
In today’s article we will become acquainted with the features and capabilities of a two-channel set with a total capacity of 16 GB with the GEX416GB3000C15ADC label and a frequency of 3000 MHz.
⇡ # Packaging and packaging
A set of two memory modules comes in a compact cardboard box, decorated very brightly and brightly. On the front side of the box there is a photo of a dynamically accelerated module, next to which are labeled with the designation of supported backlight technologies.
On the reverse side of the box you can find a sticker with the marking, memory type, frequency, timing and volume, as well as a cutout through which another sticker with the same information is glued directly to the module.
Inside the carton box, each bar is sealed in a transparent plastic blister, which further protects against possible damage.
In addition to the modules themselves, you can find cables for connecting to the motherboard, as well as a brief instruction manual and operating modes.
This memory is released in Taiwan, the manufacturer provides it with a lifetime warranty. In Russia, this kit is not sold yet, and it will be difficult to say if it will be offered attractive terms, but for large GeIL storage kits large retailers provide a five-year warranty, which is also quite good. The cost of GeIL Evo X GEX416GB3000C15ADC in foreign online stores is only 110 US dollars. This is even slightly cheaper than competitors’ products with similar technical characteristics.
⇡ # Technical features and specifications
Externally, the new GeIL Evo X memory modules look attractive and stylish. The memory is equipped with metal radiators, in the upper part of which is built-in LED lighting, and on top there is a crimson scallop – a switch of operating modes. The height of the modules is 60 mm, so they can not conflict with the majority of processor super coolers.
Since the main feature of these memory modules is the highlighting, it is with its description that we begin to get acquainted with the modules of GeIL Evo X.
The proprietary backlight system is called the Hybrid-Independent-Light-Module (HILM), which literally can be translated as “hybrid independent module lighting”. It consists of LEDs at the top of the casing and in the logo on one side of each module.
If this memory is not connected to the motherboard by an RGB cable, each module can be highlighted with its own color, the choice of which is realized by the mobile switch on the scallop of the radiators. There is a choice of four colors: red, green, blue (more precisely, it’s rather turquoise) and orange.
A four-pin connector is connected to one end of each module to connect the supplied cable to the motherboard.
But on the other hand there is a small two-pin connector that can power the module’s light from the free three-pin fan connector on the motherboard.
Earlier in the news stream, reviewers gave this connector for the possibility of connecting an additional fan directly to the memory, but this is not so and in fact – just another option for connecting the power of the backlight. However, in this case, the backlight will not be synchronized with the motherboard and will work by itself in the mode selected by the switch.
It is worth noting that, without backlighting, GeIL Evo X modules look very stylish on the motherboard.
But, of course, buying such a memory and not using its main “chip” is simply pointless (especially considering the GeIL memory array), so it’s best to use the highlighting, and use it on suitable motherboards, the recommended list of which is listed on the official website company.
Our motherboard – MSI Z270 XPower Gaming Titanium Edition – was not supported in the list (apparently, they did not yet), but it also has an RGB Mystic Light connector and the ability to connect to LED ribbons or GeIL Evo X memory modules. Thanks to this, the memory illumination will be synchronized with the motherboard and their modes of operation will change simultaneously. The main manufacturers, which we identified in the preface of the article, implemented immediately 6-8 different modes of operation of the backlight, including the color change depending on the temperature of the processor.
So if the side wall of your case is transparent, then you will not need to hang a garland on a Christmas tree in the New Year, because inside the case you will have a whole “disco”, where the first DJ can just become the memory of Geil Evo X. Highlights it’s really cool, take your word.
Well, they told us about the main thing, now it’s a little about any little things. On the stickers of the memory modules the marking GEX416GB3000C15ADC is given, the volume and timings are indicated, as well as the voltage.
Judging by the specifications, this pair of modules should work at a frequency of 3000 MHz at a voltage of 1.35 V and with main timings of 15-17-17-35. Information and diagnostic utility AIDA64 says that the manufacturer of the microcircuits of the modules is the company SK hynix and that the profile XMP 2.0 with the characteristics indicated above
The same timings were identified and motherboard BIOS.
With the activation of XMP, there were also no problems – memory successfully started on the stated frequency and timings.
